Stage 5 books are for children who are learning letter sounds e-e i-e o-e u-e ar ee ea ea (short e) er. At this stage, children will be introduced to alternative pronunciations. For example, ea can be pronounced as the long E in ‘tea’ or as the short e sound in ‘head’. They will also be reading a range of common words like ‘could’ and ‘people’. The number of words increases and adverbs are used more commonly to start sentences. Children will begin to infer and predict from more complex storylines.
